What is your inspiration for going to cosmetology school?

I moved in above a cosmetology school and it helped that my mom went to cosmetology school, and she was successful so I thought why not.

What was your experience with applying, choosing a school, costs involved?

We were required to make videos of ourselves as part of the admission process to cosmetology school so that part was fun.

What is your area of study and why?

I chose skin care and massage therapy because I truly enjoy skin treatments and making my clients feel good.

How long did it take you to complete the mandatory hours to be licensed?

cosmetology school had 600 hour programs, which took me 4 months to complete the Esthetician program and 9 months to complete the massage program. 

What advice do you have for futurecosmetology school students?

The experience at cosmetology school is very team oriented. Students have to pull there own weight, for example, laundry is a must, if everyone is not doing their share of laundry then you could potentially run out of towels.

cosmetology school  should be called Positivity school because it is so important to have a positive attitude and good energy for your clients. A spa treatment is an intimate setting and the clients are vulnerable to the energy of the therapist.

• - In a perfect world, we could all read minds and there would be no instances of miscommunication. But in this world, the cosmetology world, your clients expectations cannot be left to chance. As a hairdresser, how do you deliver satisfaction without knowing what your client expects? Perhaps they are unsure of who they want to see in the mirror after the hour they spend in your chair, but remember you are the professional and this is your field of expertise. As the hair-stylist, it is your job to help them figure it out. Hopefully, prior to the two inches of hair hitting the floor only for them later to decide they actually wanted to keep their length.
• - An important quality to have as a hair-stylist is communication. A hair-stylist can’t know what their client doesn’t tell them. This is why the consultation portion of the appointment is essential because this is where the hair-stylist receives a clear understanding of the client’s expectations. 1. What is your motivation for our appointment? Just a trim? Or are we looking for something completely different?

The art of doing make-up well requires many skills. First, the artist must be perceptive and be able to interpret the needs of their client. Second, they must have and if not acquire, extensive knowledge of the character or persona the client is striving for. This means the artist must be willing to put in time for research of a particular era and/or character. Unlike a painter, whose masterpiece comes from an intimate relationship between canvas and artist, make-up artists work closely with the production team to create the essence they are looking for on the screen. This might solicit feedback that is constructive of the make-up artist and therefore requires the skill of tactfulness and professionalism.

This is an entry-level industry where one starts at the bottom and works their way up the ladder. Often, entry-level is a trainee-make-up assistant, from which they work their way into a make-up assistant position, up to a make-up artist, and ideally reach the position of make-up Designer. Although a formal education is not required to practice the art of make-up on others, training and/or professional courses will be beneficial to the first step in this career, which is often apprenticeships and traineeships. We all have “that” friend who gets giddy with excitement at the site of your misfortune….the nasty zit that has taken over your face. Like a mad scientist they beg you to work on your face and promise you amazing results as they perform skin-care surgery. Well guess what friends, they actually can make big bucks doing it. A career in skin care starts with beauty school, where they put in the time required to get licensed. Requirements vary from state to state, but the average is about 600 hours……….and OMG is it worth it.

US Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports the occupational hourly average for estheticians and skin-care specialists continues to rise,  and last year the top paying States included Washington (I know…..I was shocked too!),California, Minnesota, and Vermont………it’s not a misprint…….. Vermont.  Estheticians in Vermont with an average salary of around $37,000/yr. Not bad for the friend whose known for “poppin’ zits”.

The fastest license a beauty school student can obtain…nails!

So many choices, how does a beauty school student choose? Listen up future beauty school graduates! I’ve some tres importante info that will help you choose which area of cosmetology to focus on should you need the cash like yesterday. In this day and age, beauty treatments range from waxing to chemical peels and maybe a ‘lil botox in between. Obviously, the more training you have the more money you will make but if you are looking to get those big bucks rolling in pronto, then certification in nails is your shortest path to the cash.

State requirements for nails in California require 400 hours. If you were to road trip across the country to New York or Miami, you would discover that number dropping to 250 hours required for state licensing as a manicurist. Which state holds the trophy for highest expectations for licensure? And the Oscar goes to…Nevada! Viva Las Vegas baby! Not only do they require more hours from beauty school students, but also this state requires you to be 18 years old to apply. If you think that is strict, Arizona’s age requirement is 23 years old.
