  • Can I “make-up” for a lack of formal training with my natural talent as a make-up artist?

Posted on June 12th, 2009 admin No comments
    Make-up artist

    Make-up artist

The art of doing make-up well requires many skills. First, the artist must be perceptive and be able to interpret the needs of their client. Second, they must have and if not acquire, extensive knowledge of the character or persona the client is striving for. This means the artist must be willing to put in time for research of a particular era and/or character. Unlike a painter, whose masterpiece comes from an intimate relationship between canvas and artist, make-up artists work closely with the production team to create the essence they are looking for on the screen. This might solicit feedback that is constructive of the make-up artist and therefore requires the skill of tactfulness and professionalism.

This is an entry-level industry where one starts at the bottom and works their way up the ladder. Often, entry-level is a trainee-make-up assistant, from which they work their way into a make-up assistant position, up to a make-up artist, and ideally reach the position of make-up Designer. Although a formal education is not required to practice the art of make-up on others, training and/or professional courses will be beneficial to the first step in this career, which is often apprenticeships and traineeships. Graduating from beauty school will open up doors for you that sheer natural talent cannot.

As a cosmetologist, your clients are your canvas for you to create a masterpiece. Each appointment is an opportunity for you to create a signature look. We all remember the “Jennifer Aniston-do” during her decade as “Rachel” on the hit sitcom Friends, which continues to provide Chris McMillan her stylist with a paycheck that makes the rest of us pay-check-to-pay-check people green with envy.

I hope you are sitting down while you are reading this because in March The Targeted News Service reported that Chris McMillan’s weekly paycheck to style Aniston’s hair on her European tour for “Marley & Me,” was $56,000. …….not a year but per week! I wonder what the make-up artist was paid!

    Hair Dresser

    Hair Dresser

One of my mom’s best friends has been a stylist for decades and he tells her the most bizarre stories he hears from his clients. My favorite was the one when he had the wife and the mistress of one man (who was also his client!) in side by side chairs prior to a local New Year’s Eve Gala— Talk about tension?!?

Since I don’t remember any lovers’ triangle murder that year, I guess the stylist will file the story away for when he writes his memoirs after retirement.

This brings me to another beauty school course requirement that I forgot to mention in my last blog: people skills, and the sanctity of the stylist’s chair. Although there’s no stated contract guaranteeing confidentiality between client and stylist, you can be sure it’s implied that what’s overheard in the chair, stays in the chair!

When you enroll in one of the beauty schools or cosmetology colleges listed here on beautyschoollistings.com, you will certainly receive training in communications and human relations…training that will serve you well in every area of your life. What a bargain!

Beauty School certification and professional skills all for one reasonable price…such a deal!

    Later,
    Annie

  • Beauty Schools – I made the right choice

Posted on May 18th, 2009 admin No comments

I chose beauty school because I feel that being able to show your creativity is very important and having educators who are equally wanting to do the same is very inspiring. I have learned so much here at Aveda since the first day of school. I could not have made a better choice. It is awesome to make up every day, wanting to come to school. I love Aveda.

I chose Aveda institute Denver because I felt as though it is much more than a beauty school. It is not only a professional environment, but a learning environment where the educators push you to do your best. Aveda takes pride in what they stand for. A lifestyle that extends much further than outer beauty. I am acquiring the building blocks for my futures as a cosmetologist and will always refer back to what I learned here at Aveda institute. It is setting me up for success.
