• Re-locating after cosmetology school? Here is the 411 on Reciprocity Programs

As if you don’t have enough to think about trying to map out your best possible course for cosmetology school, but your expected to be psychic and predict where you’ll want to live for the rest of your life so your license will actually be useful.  When choosing a cosmetology school, applicants should remember their license allows them to practice within the bundle2state they pass the examination. Although reciprocal programs are gaining popularity, most of the 50 states have some minimum requirements for a cosmetologist to practice in a different state than they were licensed.

Minnesota- Requires cosmetology school grads to have worked a minimum of 1800 hours within the last three years.

Maryland- requires the previous state’s cosmetology school to meet their criteria for licensing.

Kentucky- Requires a valid license and 2 years experience.

Arkansas – requires both a written and practical examination to be licensed there.

Deleware- Honors cosmetology licenses from all 50 states including D.C.

Any of you planning on living in Hawaii? Hawaii is one of the few states that does not have a reciprocity program so you might want to consider attending cosmetology school there. Colorado does their program a little differently by offering those cosmetologists from other states to apply for an endorsement, kind of like a sponsor, and each case is determined on an individual basis.

Whatever state you may be in, the hours required to complete cosmetology school are relatively consistant state to state. But should you decide to pack up and move to California from Michigan, please keep in mind that not all states have a reciprocity program and it could pose a challenge.
