The beauty industry has taken on a life of its own and producing revenues that would make the bitter lady I met in the unemployment line consumed with rage. During a time when food stamps are not just something you read about but are now applying for, the make-up industry continues to make money hand over fist.

  • Re-locating after cosmetology school? Here is the 411 on Reciprocity Programs

Posted on June 24th, 2009 admin No comments

As if you don’t have enough to think about trying to map out your best possible course for cosmetology school, but your expected to be psychic and predict where you’ll want to live for the rest of your life so your license will actually be useful.  When choosing a cosmetology school, applicants should remember their license allows them to practice within the bundle2state they pass the examination. Although reciprocal programs are gaining popularity, most of the 50 states have some minimum requirements for a cosmetologist to practice in a different state than they were licensed.

Minnesota- Requires cosmetology school grads to have worked a minimum of 1800 hours within the last three years.

Maryland- requires the previous state’s cosmetology school to meet their criteria for licensing.

Kentucky- Requires a valid license and 2 years experience.

Arkansas – requires both a written and practical examination to be licensed there.

Deleware- Honors cosmetology licenses from all 50 states including D.C.

Any of you planning on living in Hawaii? Hawaii is one of the few states that does not have a reciprocity program so you might want to consider attending cosmetology school there. Colorado does their program a little differently by offering those cosmetologists from other states to apply for an endorsement, kind of like a sponsor, and each case is determined on an individual basis.

Whatever state you may be in, the hours required to complete cosmetology school are relatively consistant state to state. But should you decide to pack up and move to California from Michigan, please keep in mind that not all states have a reciprocity program and it could pose a challenge.

  • A Career in Massage Therapy

Posted on June 17th, 2009 admin No comments

Massage TherapyThinking of pursuing a career in massage therapy? Here is a snap-shot of the field of massage therapy and what  licensed massage therapists are saying about their career choice.

According to AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association) reports that the average income for massage therapists in 2007-2008 was $41.50/hr. Massage therapists worked on an average of 41 clients a month. Many massage therapists pursued their massage therapy education for supplemental income, in fact 82% of individuals polled use massage therapy as a second career. So how do you get in on all the action?

First step is to select a school to attend  and obtain the required hours of instruction to meet state certification criteria for the state you are in. AMTA’s survey revealed the average number hours spent for massage therapy‘s initial training was 633.

Katie (Massage Therapist in Denver, CO)- “I love this field! The training took me about 9 months to complete, going to school part time and it has been totally worth it. Massage therapy enables me to work out of the comfort of my own home or my clients’. I have this amazing table that is designed to travel so anywhere I go, I can make money doing what I love. I worked in a salon for about a year after I completed my schooling and through contacts and referrals I have built my own business independently. Massage therapy is great for anyone who wants to be their own boss, set their own schedule, and provide a service that makes their clients feel better.”

Maggie (Massage Therapist in Plano,TX)- “Massage therapy has been a great career choice for me. As a massage therapist I have been able to have a career and a family that accommodates mine and my family’s needs. Shortly after I finished my schooling I got married and over the next 4 years had two children. Massage therapy allowed me the flexibility to work and have a family. And my husband has no complaints with the pay-check I bring home each month from  massage therapy.”

    Questions

What is your inspiration for going to cosmetology school?

I moved in above a cosmetology school and it helped that my mom went to cosmetology school, and she was successful so I thought why not.

What was your experience with applying, choosing a school, costs involved?

We were required to make videos of ourselves as part of the admission process to cosmetology school so that part was fun.

What is your area of study and why?

I chose skin care and massage therapy because I truly enjoy skin treatments and making my clients feel good.

How long did it take you to complete the mandatory hours to be licensed?

cosmetology school had 600 hour programs, which took me 4 months to complete the Esthetician program and 9 months to complete the massage program.

What advice do you have for futurecosmetology school students?

The experience at cosmetology school is very team oriented. Students have to pull there own weight, for example, laundry is a must, if everyone is not doing their share of laundry then you could potentially run out of towels.

cosmetology school  should be called Positivity school because it is so important to have a positive attitude and good energy for your clients. A spa treatment is an intimate setting and the clients are vulnerable to the energy of the therapist.

  • Tips for hair-dressers road to satisfied clients…….

Tips for hair-dressers road to satisfied clients…….

    • - In a perfect world, we could all read minds and there would be no instances of miscommunication. But in this world, the cosmetology world, your clients expectations cannot be left to chance. As a hairdresser, how do you deliver satisfaction without knowing what your client expects? Perhaps they are unsure of who they want to see in the mirror after the hour they spend in your chair, but remember you are the professional and this is your field of expertise. As the hair-stylist, it is your job to help them figure it out. Hopefully, prior to the two inches of hair hitting the floor only for them later to decide they actually wanted to keep their length.
    • - An important quality to have as a hair-stylist is communication. A hair-stylist can’t know what their client doesn’t tell them. This is why the consultation portion of the appointment is essential because this is where the hair-stylist receives a clear understanding of the client’s expectations. Some questions that would help a hair-stylist to deliver customer satisfaction include…..
    1. What is your motivation for our appointment? Just a trim? Or are we looking for something completely different?
    2. Shorter? Layers? Colors/highlights?
    3. Do you have a specific style in mind? A celebrity’s inspiration?
    4. Lifestyle: How much time do you have or are you willing to spend on your hair?
    5. COSTS: What is the price range of options, and the cost to maintain them?

Money can be an awkward topic to discuss, but just like all the other important details of the service, the more informed the client is the less likelihood for there to be any unpleasant surprises!

  • Top 10 Reasons to Enroll in Cosmetology School after High School

Posted on June 14th, 2009 admin No comments
    Graduation Cosmetology Schools

    Graduation Cosmetology Schools

Congratulations to all of you high school seniors that make up the Class of ’09. And while some of you are packing up and are off to college, others might be experiencing a little phase that I like to call the “what the hell do I do now” phase. DO NOT PANIC! If the traditional four year college is not for you, there is a buffet of options for you to explore at cosmetology school.

Top 10 reasons why to enroll after high school

    1. Cosmetology school will be the perfect solution to getting your parents off your back.
    2. Cosmetology school offers classes that will certify you to work in a variety of fields (i.e. medical offices, salons, hotels/Casinos, Cruise Ships, t.v. and movie sets, etc.)
    3. Cosmetology school will provide you with a back-up career should you decide to explore different career paths throughout your life.
    4. Cosmetology school offers programs that can be completed for licensure in as little as nine months.
    5. Cosmetology school offers training that can be utilized nationwide.
    6. The field of cosmetology is in the top 5 for industries unaffected by the recession
    7. Admission requirements are a high school diploma or GED
    8. Many cosmetology schools offer job placement upon completion of their program.
    9. Tuition for Cosmetology school is cheap compared to a 4 year university and can be paid for with financial aid and/or grants.
    10. Cosmetology school will provide you with skills and training to utilize for your lifetime.

In good times and bad people continue to spend money on self-care needs. Nails still need to be done, chemical peels performed to erase the wrinkles the stress has induced, massages given to alleviate the stress knot that has taken up residence in your right shoulder blade, and lets face it ladies…..that unwanted facial hair does not go away because your budget wants you to eliminate your excess spending.

  • Can I “make-up” for a lack of formal training with my natural talent as a make-up artist?

Posted on June 12th, 2009 admin No comments
    Make-up artist

    Make-up artist

The art of doing make-up well requires many skills. First, the artist must be perceptive and be able to interpret the needs of their client. Second, they must have and if not acquire, extensive knowledge of the character or persona the client is striving for. This means the artist must be willing to put in time for research of a particular era and/or character. Unlike a painter, whose masterpiece comes from an intimate relationship between canvas and artist, make-up artists work closely with the production team to create the essence they are looking for on the screen. This might solicit feedback that is constructive of the make-up artist and therefore requires the skill of tactfulness and professionalism.

This is an entry-level industry where one starts at the bottom and works their way up the ladder. Often, entry-level is a trainee-make-up assistant, from which they work their way into a make-up assistant position, up to a make-up artist, and ideally reach the position of make-up Designer. Although a formal education is not required to practice the art of make-up on others, training and/or professional courses will be beneficial to the first step in this career, which is often apprenticeships and traineeships. Graduating from beauty school will open up doors for you that sheer natural talent cannot.

    Celebrity make up

    Celebrity make up

As a cosmetologist, your clients are your canvas for you to create a masterpiece. Each appointment is an opportunity for you to create a signature look. We all remember the “Jennifer Aniston-do” during her decade as “Rachel” on the hit sitcom Friends, which continues to provide Chris McMillan her stylist with a paycheck that makes the rest of us pay-check-to-pay-check people green with envy.

I hope you are sitting down while you are reading this because in March The Targeted News Service reported that Chris McMillan’s weekly paycheck to style Aniston’s hair on her European tour for “Marley & Me,” was $56,000. …….not a year but per week! I wonder what the make-up artist was paid!

What do you call a friend whose obsessed with popping zits, plucking eyebrows………an esthetician! We all have “that” friend who gets giddy with excitement at the site of your misfortune….the nasty zit that has taken over your face. Like a mad scientist they beg you to work on your face and promise you amazing results as they perform skin-care surgery. Well guess what friends, they actually can make big bucks doing it. A career in skin care starts with beauty school, where they put in the time required to get licensed. Requirements vary from state to state, but the average is about 600 hours……….and OMG is it worth it.

US Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports the occupational hourly average for estheticians and skin-care specialists continues to rise,  and last year the top paying States included Washington (I know…..I was shocked too!),California, Minnesota, and Vermont………it’s not a misprint…….. Vermont.  Estheticians in Vermont with an average salary of around $37,000/yr. Not bad for the friend whose known for “poppin’ zits”.
